SeerBit adds PayPal at checkout for African merchants

SeerBit, a pan-African payments company based in Nigeria, has integrated PayPal into its checkout infrastructure, allowing merchants across its supported markets to accept payments directly from PayPal users, the company announced on August 10. Shoppers on SeerBit-powered platforms can now select PayPal alongside cards, bank transfers and mobile money, with merchants managing all transaction types in one interface.

“African businesses have the talent and products to compete globally,” said Omoniyi Kolade, chief executive of SeerBit, in the announcement, describing access to trusted payment options as the missing link, according to TechAfrica News.

Amir Valliani, vice president for global markets at PayPal, said the integration is designed to help SeerBit merchants reach more international customers and build trust beyond their local markets, citing rising connectivity and a growing number of digitally native businesses on the continent.

The arrangement gives merchants access to PayPal’s user base without building a separate integration, consolidating reconciliation across payment types rather than handling international payments through a second system, according to The Paypers. Buyers without a PayPal account gain no new capability under the arrangement.

SeerBit operates in 10 African countries and counts the British Council, United Bank for Africa and Xero among its partners, according to Disrupt Africa. The company linked the integration to preparations for deeper regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area, where interoperable payment infrastructure is expected to support cross-border commerce.

The move follows a pattern of international payment providers entering African markets through partnerships with local infrastructure companies rather than direct market entry. PayPal has separately committed $100 million to back entrepreneurs across the Middle East and Africa.
